Ministry of Local Development employees demand permanent contracts

Hundreds of public servants at Ministry of Local Development information centers demonstrated Tuesday on Qasr al-Aini street, downtown Cairo, demanding permanent contracts.

The employees organized a protest that blocked the street in response to government’s decision to ignore their demands.

"We demand that Prime Minister, Essam Sharaf, interfere to change our job status, particularly as it has been like this for ten years," said head of the Independent Syndicate for Workers.

“The salaries are LE99 per month.”

Abdel Fatah said: "Safwat al-Nahas, head of the Central Agency for Organization and Administration (CAOA), has opposed hiring employees on a permanent basis, but he hired 700000 of the 2010 graduates and ignored our demands."

Nahas told protesters that they must get approval from governors in their respective governorates, while the governors said that this decision is not in their authority, the syndicate's head said.

The syndicate head demanded that Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling military council, and the Prime Minister, dismiss Nahas for “adopting policies against the principles of the revolution such as disregarding citizens’ demands like the previous regime did.”

One of the protesters, Nahed Ali, said the protesters decided to hold an open ended sit-in outside the cabinet until their demands are met.
