Mohamed al-Quddusi sentenced to 10 years in absentia for ‘broadcasting false news’

The Dokki Misdemeanor Court has on Tuesday sentenced in absentia Mohamed al-Quddusi from the satellite TV channel Sharq to 10 years in prison and fined him LE500 for allegedly broadcasting false news that allegedly aimed to overthrow the regime in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Al-Quddusi is a political analyst who supports the Muslim Brotherhood and considers the July 3 military ouster of the first elected president of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi a “coup”.

Since Morsi's ouster, the new military-backed regime has not tolerated criticism or political dissent, often punishing perpetrators with jail sentences.

Also on Tuesday, Al-Shorouk reported that a woman was arrested in Matrouh province for allegedly releasing some 76 balloons with anti-government slogans written on them. Authorities said she was part of the Muslim Brotherhood and claim to have found the marker that she used to write the slogans.
