Osama Mohamed Morsi said Tuesday an Egyptian court postponed the verdict in his father’s court cases because it coincided with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s visit to Germany.
On Tuesday, an Egyptian court delayed the ruling in former President Mohamed Morsi's jailbreak and espionage cases to June 16.
Osama, who spoke to Anadolu Agency by phone, said that “the verdict was postponed in order to not embarrass the coup’s leader, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, during his visit to Germany.”
Since the then-army chief seized power in 2013, thousands of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have been jailed and hundreds sentenced to death in trials widely regarded by international rights groups as unfair.
“President Mohamed Morsi and the revolution that is present on the streets for around two years is stronger than any previously prepared verdicts that are merely political,” Morsi said.
Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, was ousted by the military in a coup in July 2013, only one year after assuming office in the country’s first free and democratic elections.
The military's actions came hours after mass protests against Morsi's rule.
