A number of MPs have submitted urgent interpellations to the government regarding an Israeli mission currently excavating under a girls’ school in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia with the stated aim of locating the bodies of Israeli soldiers killed in past conflicts with Egypt.
MP Georgette Quillini questioned Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif as to whether Egypt had signed a reciprocity agreement with Israel allowing Egypt to dispatch its own missions to Israel in order to search for dead Egyptian soldiers buried there.
MP Mohamed el-Omda said that ongoing Israeli excavations in Ismailia showed Egypt to be "completely subservient" to Israel and the US.
Mohamed Bassiouni, for his part, head of the consultative Shura Council’s foreign affairs committee, said the Egyptian government had not officially allowed the excavations.
According to an Interior Ministry source, meanwhile, the Israeli mission has yet to come across any dead Israeli soldiers buried under the school.
