Mubarak-era info minister appeal against jail sentence accepted

The Court of Cassation has accepted an appeal by the defense lawyers of former information and youth minister Anas al-Fiqqi against a one-year prison sentence he had been handed over charges of illicit gain, ordering retrial for the senior Mubarak regime official.

Fiqqi was handed a suspended one-year sentence and fined LE1.8 billion over charges of abusing his post for illegal gains.

Fiqqi’s indictment petition said that during the period 2002-2011, he abused his post as a minister of youth and later as a minister of mass information to obtain illicit gains worth of LE33.4 million the source of which he failed to identify.

However, his laywer, Tarek Abdel Aziz, said he had submitted to the court copies of documents starting his client’s properties since he headed the government’s General Authority for Cultural Palaces and until he left his post as information minister.
