Cairo Criminal Court President Mahmoud al-Rashidy approved a request by Farid al-Deeb, lawyer for former President Hosni Mubarak, to file a lawsuit against Al-Masry Al-Youm columnist Mohamed Amin and referred it to the prosecutor general to take legal action.
Deeb claimed Amin discredited the testimonies of the eyewitnesses in Mubarak’s case that is known as the “Trial of the Century” and called them “Mubarak’s men” in his article that was published in the Al-Masry Al-Youm issue No. 3703.
In his article, Amin wrote: “I have no problem if the judiciary acquits Mubarak in the killing of the demonstrators case. I would even salute it. But my real problem is to claim that Mubarak led the January revolution. For Farid al-Deeb said Mubarak supported the peaceful protesters almost as a leader of the revolution.
“If so, who moved the security forces against the demonstrators at dawn? Who killed the honorable demonstrators?
“The time Deeb took in Mubarak’s defense, his arguments to prove Mubarak is innocent and the testimonies of Mubarak’s men, such as Tantawi, Omar Suleiman and Sami Anan, all are in favor of his innocence.
“It is clear Deeb seeks sympathy for Mubarak, a desperate attempt to get him an acquittal not amnesty.”
