Muslim Brotherhood member mulls running for president

Abdel Moneim Abul Fottouh, a Muslim Brotherhood member in the Shura Council, Egypt’s upper house of parliament, said he mulls running for president as an independent candidate.

At a symposium at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria’s famed modern library, on Wednesday, Abul Fottouh said he disagreed with Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie who banned group members from joining any political party other than the group’s “Justice and Freedom Party.”

He said he opposed the idea of the group forming a political party in the first place.

Muslim Brotherhood leading figure Sobhi Saleh said Abul Fottouh will “pay the price for what he said,” accusing him of thwarting the group’s principles.
