The National Association for Change (NAC) is calling for a million-man demonstration Friday dubbed the “Friday of Prosecution and Purging.” Protesters plan to express frustration at the slow pace of efforts to prosecute regime officials and those involved in killing protesters during the revolution.
Friday protests have become a weekly event in Tahrir Square during and after the revolution, although they have rarely drawn a million participants. Calls for this week's protest, which were circulated online among NAC members, said that those responsible for spoiling political life and pillaging the country’s fortunes over three decades have been boldly gathering the vestiges of the ousted regime to wage a counter-revolution.
The group called upon Egyptians to gather at Cairo’s Tahrir Square and other major venues nationwide to stage a 'people's trial' of former President Hosni Mubarak and his family.
The group said it will hold a mock trial of former regime figures, headed by councilor Mahmoud al-Khodeiry as chief judge, aided by other prominent lawyers.
Egyptian authorities are working on interrogating and prosecuting several ministers and officials from the ousted regime on charges related to protesters' deaths as well as corruption.
