Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s younger son, Gamal, is a possible nominee for the upcoming presidential election, said Hossam Badrawi, a National Democratic Party (NDP) leader.
“Gamal Mubarak and all the members of the party’s Higher Body are possible nominees,” added Badrawi, the NDP’s secretary of education. However, he said that “the president of the party [Mubarak] should (first) express his desire not to put himself forward. The party will then choose the most competent member.”
In an interview with Al-Hurra satellite channel on Thursday, Badrawi said the NDP suffered from the exclusion of the opposition from parliament. “Nobody has benefited from the loss of the opposition.”
The result of the parliamentary election represents a challenge for the NDP, he said, adding that that the newly-formed parliament does not include a genuine opposition.
