Recently-appointed National Democratic Party (NDP) Secretary-General Mohamed Ragab has denied reports that the party had been dissolved following last week's ouster of longstanding president and party leader Hosni Mubarak.
“Only party members can make that decision,” he said.
Former NDP Professions Secretary Mohamed al-Hefnawy, meanwhile, asserted that the party deserved to be done away with, given its poor track record.
“Corruption within the party has spread down to the bone,” al-Hefnawy said, pointing out that he had tendered his own resignation two months ago.
“All of the honorable members were marginalized,” he said. “This left the opportunists in control of the party.”
More than 200 ruling party MPs resigned from the NDP immediately following Mubarak's resignation on 11 February.
