NGO index shows bribes still rife at government agencies

A transparency index released by an Egypt-based NGO on Sunday showed that bribes were still omnipresent at government institutions.

The fifth Egypt bribery index by the Arab Center for Integrity and Transparency has said bribes were still highly common at the customs authorities as well as agencies managing new urban communities.

This year’s index shows bribery grew among police stations, prosecution offices, court employees, traffic departments, government-run corporations and the Agriculture Ministry. However, bribery marked a decline at investment authorities as well as the ministries of transport, health and housing. Bribes also saw a drop at notary offices, manpower departments and government banks.

The center rated the presence of bribes on a 0-10 scale, with the highest degrees rated as the least infected by bribes and those with the lowest scores as the most corrupt. Below are some of the results:

Agriculture Ministry: 0

The New Urban Communities Authority: 1

Sports sector: 2

Banking sector: 3

Petroleum sector: 5

Communications sector: 5

Interior Ministry: 6

Health Ministry:  7

General Authority for Investment: 9

Junior employees:

Traffic departments: 0

Prosecution employees: 0

Customs employees: 1

Airports employees: 4

Government banking employees: 6
