NHRC official to mediate lawyers-judges dispute

Vice-President of the National Human Rights Council (NHRC) Moqbil Shaker has reportedly been assigned to mediate the ongoing crisis between Egypt’s lawyers and judges due to his close relationship with both sides in the dispute.

The appointment comes as lawyers maintained their collective strike in a number of cities across Egypt, criticizing the “passive” position taken by the Egyptian Lawyers Syndicate on this issue.

The syndicate, meanwhile, has assembled a legal team to defend the two lawyers sentenced to five years each in prison for assaulting Tanta’s chief prosecutor earlier this month, a verdict that initially ignited the crisis.
