Water resource ministers from Nile Basin states have agreed to hold an exceptional meeting in Nairobi, Kenya in February to discuss Nile water usage and waste reduction, according to official sources.
The same sources stressed, however, that the meeting would not address outstanding differences between upstream and downstream countries, as ministers prefer to focus on positive issues in an effort to foster closer cooperation between Nile Basin states.
A number of upstream states would like to revoke two historical Nile-sharing treaties on the basis that they were signed under Italian and British occupation of the region.
Meeting attendees will also discuss proposals for boosting Egyptian technical support to Nile Basin countries, sources added.
