Veterinary consultant Karam Mostafa debunked reports that a crocodile had been sighted in the Ausim area of Giza on Sunday, explaining that the sighting is actually of a “Nile monitor”.
During a phone call with the privately-owned Sada al-Balad channel, Mostafa confirmed that the Nile monitor is a type of reptile that does not pose a danger to humans.
He continued that it can swallow a rabbit or any small animal, and is a rare animal in residential areas, being more commonly found in deserts and near lakes and seas.
Mostafa stressed that the monitor lizard is a creature that lives in humid places and feeds on dead animals, especially on agricultural roads.
“The animal is peaceful and harmless to humans,” he assured.
