No choice but to negotiate to resolve GERD crisis: Sudan PM

Prime Minister of Sudan Abdalla Hamdok emphasized his country’s adherence to reaching a comprehensive and binding agreement on the rules governing the filling and operating of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and said that there is no choice but to negotiate in order to resolve the outstanding legal and technical issues between the three concerned countries.

Hamdok chaired a meeting for the Supreme Committee for negotiations on the dam, which included the Sudanese negotiating team.

The meeting consisted of a lengthy discussion on the progress of the negotiation process and developments in recent weeks.

The meeting offered its full support to the negotiating delegation and approved a series of political and diplomatic measures to strengthen the negotiations in a way that preserves Sudan’s national interests.

Hamdok will hold intensive meetings in the coming days with the concerned parties, led by President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, to present Sudan’s position and welcome what he stated in his last confirmed speech concernign the position of AU experts on the negotiation agenda.
