NTRA: Mobile operators exceeded poor service legal rate

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has said that service by Egypt's three mobile carriers, Vodafone, Mobinil and Etisalat is getting worse.


In its quarterly report, NTRA revealed a growing failure in starting the calls exceeding the allowed limit in the licenses of the three operators.

Failure to start calls in Vodafone surpassed the allowed limit (2 percent) in Benha, Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, Mahalla, Mansoura and Shebin al-Koum, the report added.

Failure to finish the calls in the same operator surpassed the allowed limit (2 percent) in Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh and Fayyoum. Worsening voice quality exceeded the allowed limit (10 percent) in Kafr al-Sheikh, Damietta and Shebin al-Koum, which is the highest rate among the other operators, according to the report.

The report indicated an increasing rate of failed calls in Mobinil, surpassing the allowed limit, in Dahab (south Sinai). For Etisalat, the rate of failed calls exceeded the limit in east and south of Cairo, the report said.

However, the report revealed success of Mobinil in finishing the calls without exceeding the allowed limits.

Vodafone had the worst voice quality, the report said. In Kafr al-Sheikh, the rate reached 13.2 percent, 12.1 percent in Damietta and 11.6 percent in Shebin al-Koum.

Mobile data quality did not exceed the allowed rate in the three operators, according to NTRA.

Governmental official said NTRA has legal mechanisms to penalize any of the three providers in case of bad quality of service. However, they were not being activated yet.

He called for forcing the network operators to stick to a pipeline to enhance the services or apply sanctions mentioned in law, which include fines that could reach withdrawal of the license.
