Official: 15% nursing deficit in government medical sector

Kawthar Mohamed, head of the Nursing Syndicate and the Health Ministry’s central department for nursing, said the government's medical sector suffers from a 15 percent deficit in the nursing field. She added that an increase in the number of graduates is not enough to cover the deficit.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mohamed called on the government to consider improving conditions for nurses, as well as create ways of attracting people to the profession.

Mohamed added that the syndicate has prepared a plan in cooperation with the Health Ministry to develop the profession. The syndicate also signed a protocol of cooperation with the ministry and Cairo University to carry out a ‘specialized nursing’ educational program.

“We submitted a law on practicing the profession to the legislative committee of the constitutional court. We launched campaigns to change the stereotype of the profession,” she added.
