Opposition blasts pro-Gamal electoral campaign

A recently-launched campaign in support of a possible presidential bid by Gamal Mubarak, the 47-year-old son of President Hosni Mubarak, has drawn angry reactions from opposition parties and movements.

“My party will launch a counter campaign against the so-called Gamal Mubarak Popular Support Coalition,” said Ghad Party founder Ayman Nour. “I’ll hang posters of myself as the Ghad Party candidate in the same places they put up posters of Gamal Mubarak.”

Wafd Party Honorary President Mustafa el-Tawil, for his part, expected the senior Mubarak to run again in next year’s elections. “Mubarak has said he would continue to serve the country as long as his heart was still beating,” el-Tawil noted.

Nasserist Party Vice President Sameh Ashour said the pro-Gamal campaign was only the latest chapter in an ongoing plot to bequeath power to the presidential scion.

Essam el-Erian, prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood opposition movement, however, saw the campaign as little more than ineffective propaganda. “We should concentrate on upcoming parliamentary elections, which are more important,” he said.
