The owner of the car seized in the latest incident in Egypt of an Uber driver allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman, Ahmed Shaaban, said that he has been dealing with the driver, Hussain, for three years, and in that time has seen no problems from him.
“He maintains the car, and I trust him, and he is from my hometown,” Shaaban stated.
He added that his lawyer has filed papers to the Public Prosecution demanding the return of the car as it not the suspect’s property.
The accused driver said before the Public Prosecution that “I installed surveillance cameras in the car from the inside, and its recordings are my evidence of innocence. Every day in the morning I transport people to the Fifth Settlement and at the end of the day I open the Uber application to receive requests.”
The suspect, Hussain, denied trying to assault the victim Nabila Awad with a knife to force her to take off her clothes and touch her body, as she said in the police report.
The cameras in the car are proof of his innocence, he claimed, and demanded that they be inspected in order to prove his innocence.
He further claimed that the incident was caused by a dispute over the value of the ride between him and Awad, after refused to receive the money by Visa card.
The incident dates back to May 11, and the police began their investigation after the Nasr City Police Department received a report from the victim in which she reported that the driver tried to rape her, and was holding a “cutter,” but she resisted him, causing an injury to her right hand.
