Parliamentary committee calls on Justice Ministry to restructure police force

The People’s Assembly Defense, National Security and Mobilization Committee on Monday called on the Justice Ministry to reply to MP proposals on the police authority law, so that the law can be amended and the police force restructured. The committee said that the Interior Ministry has refused to address this matter.

The committee held its second meeting under the chairmanship of Major General Abbas Mukhaimar to continue discussions on the proposals submitted by MPs Mohamed al-Beltagy, Wahid Abdel Maguid and Anwar al-Sadat so that Parliament can begin taking practical steps toward restructuring the police force.

The committee postponed its meeting, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday, to allow Interior Ministry representatives to attend and express their opinion on the proposals. However, the ministry sent a letter to the committee on Monday in which they declined to attend, saying the ministry committee formed to consider the restructuring and current laws “had not finished its work yet.”

After reading the letter, Mukhaimar sent a copy of the proposals to the Justice Ministry’s representative for consideration.
