Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday he will meet with Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal in Cairo to discuss the reconciliation pact signed by Palestinian factions in May.
The two men will discuss choosing a prime minister and try to reach an agreement on a presidential candidate, informed Palestinian sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Azzam al-Ahmed, member of the Fatah movement's central committee and head of its delegation for Palestinian reconciliation, said Abbas and Meshaal will discuss ways to achieve reconciliation and remove any obstacles that face either party. He said he hoped Hamas would attend the meeting with the same spirit of cooperation.
"I don't expect disputes to erupt in this meeting,” Azzam told Al-Masry Al-Youm, who said the meeting would take place in coordination with Egypt. ‘We’re coming to discuss solutions for the reconciliation. We have nothing on our minds but Palestine and the reconciliation.”
Abbas arrived in Cairo Tuesday and met with Arab League chief Nabil al-Araby. He will meet with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi Wednesday.
Palestinian Ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League Barakat al-Farra said the meeting with Tantawi would tackle Palestinian issues and other topics of joint interest. The meeting, according to Farra, will be an opportunity to thank Egypt for its great support of the reconciliation process.
