Palestinian president to visit Egypt Thursday

Head of Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Hussein Tantawi will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday to discuss efforts to reconcile Fateh and Hamas, Palestine's two leadership groups, said Egyptian diplomatic sources on Saturday.

The sources said Tantawi, who is also the Egyptian Defense Minister, extended the invitation to Abbas.

Abbas has launched an initiative to visit Gaza to achieve a reconciliation and call for the formation of a government that includes independent Palestinian figures, who will prepare for parliamentary, presidential and national council elections within a specific period.

Members from the Fateh Central Committee — namely Azzamal-Ahmed, Sakhr Besaisu, Nabit Saath, Nasser al-Qudwa — visited Cairo last week, as well as Hamas leaders Mahmoud al-Zahhar and Khalil al-Hayya.
