Palestinians protest fuel crisis before Egyptian Embassy in Gaza

Palestinians staged a sit-in on Sunday before the Egyptian Embassy in the Gaza Strip that has been closed for five years, demanding Egypt resolve the fuel and electricity crisis there.

“We shall continue protests until the Egyptian authorities respond to our demands,” said Mahmoud Abu Othman, a protester, told the German news agency DPA.

The Energy Authority in Gaza is searching for alternative fuel supplies from other Arab countries to resolve the three-week old problem.

“Supporting the strip and easing the blockade is a strategic goal for us,” said Egyptian Ambassador Yasser Othman.

Egypt differed with the dismissed Palestinian government on the means and prices of fuel supplies to Gaza.

Ali Hayek, head of the Federation of Palestinian Industries, warned that factories in the Gaza Strip would be forced to close down, and called on the dismissed government to resolve the crisis.
