A delegation of eleven MPs from the People's Assembly paid a visit on Thursday to Tora Prison, south of Cairo, where officials from the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak are detained.
The delegation also reviewed the construction and renovation in the hospital ward where Mubarak would be detained.
Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim authorized the visit, security sources said. The MPs began the tour by meeting with General Mohamed Naguib, deputy interior minister for the prisons department.
The state-run daily Al-Ahram said on its website that the People’s Assembly’s Human Rights Committee is reviewing the conditions of Tora Prison Hospital to ensure that it is equipped to care for Mubarak’s health and meets human rights standards.
The PA’s Health Committee toured the hospital last month and reported that it is fit to receive Mubarak, who is currently staying in the International Medical Center (IMC) in Cairo.
Judge Ahmed Refaat, the head judge in Mubarak’s trial, rejected the report and decided that Mubarak should remain in the IMC until the verdict in the case is delivered on 2 June.
