The People’s Assembly on Tuesday began its session by discussing how the government should respond to the demands of the families of the revolution's martyrs, as well as those injured during the uprising.
Independent MP Amr Hamzawy, along with other members, asked Speaker Saad al-Katatny to open a discussion about forming a parliamentary committee to investigate the circumstances of protesters killed since 28 January last year.
The session was scheduled to start at 11 am, and the main task was to form parliamentary committees. However, the session began at noon.
Dozens of supporters of the Salafi-oriented Nour Party gathered on the street in front of the People's Assembly, a contrast from the day before when thousands showed up to support the newly elected members of Parliament.
The Nour supporters gathered on People's Assembly Street to protect the party's representatives as they entered the Parliament building, an Egypt Independent correspondent reported.
MPs will select the heads of parliamentary committees during Tuesday's session.
Police heightened security at the entrance and exits of the streets leading to the Parliament building. Dozens of Central Security Forces personnel and security leaders gathered at the street's main two entrances.
The armed forces secured the Parliament building from the inside. Two fire engines were stationed on the street, on which several marches took place Monday.
Security forces outside the assembly did not allow MPs to park inside the Parliament building, state-run news agency MENA said, allocating the West Cairo district parking garage for them instead.
