PEC notifies Sabbahi of violating presidential elections rules

The Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) notified presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi of his violation of the elections rules after he held a press conference, Wednesday, to explain his platform.

The commission said the conference was a clear violation of the campaigning rules, scheduled to begin on 3 May and end on 23 May 2014.

The PEC issued a statement Thursday saying it also notified CBC Extra channel of violating the presidential elections rules by broadcasting the conference. The commission will take legal action against the violation, the statement added.

The PEC requested from the minister of local and administrative development and Daqahlia governor to remove all forms of campaigning in different governorates, especially the city of Mansoura after former MPs hanged banners there to support a presidential candidate.

Article 18 of the law regulating presidential elections prohibits electioneering in non-scheduled dates, a PEC source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The violator should be fined, in accordance with Article 55 of the law, between LE20000 and LE200000.
