Dozens of people with special needs staged demonstrations outside the Cairo Governorate headquarters on Thursday to demand housing units. They accused the headquarters of nepotism in distributing units.
Mahmoud Hussein, a protester, said he had applied for a unit in 1996, but did not receive it. “Everytime we ask the officials they tell us to come back in six months,” he said. “It's been 20 years now.”
“We pay high rent although we don’t make much money and we don’t have children to support us,” he added. “People who have applied after us received their units.”
For his part, Cairo Governor Galal Mostafa said he will review the applications.
“We will deliver 1,220 units in December, of which 140 are allocated for people with special needs,” he said.
