In a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Israeli President Shimon Peres denied Israeli involvement in Thursday's explosion in Beirut.
The Yedioth Ahronoth website said Peres was surprised that Lebanese President Michel Suleiman was holding Israel responsible for the blast.
The newspaper also quoted Peres as saying that bloodshed in the Middle East should stop.
On Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, Peres said that Palestinians cannot give their people all they want, but they know what the people want.
For his part, Ban Ki-moon called on both sides to avoid actions that may jeopardize the peace talks, adding that Israel has a lot to contribute to the region, but that peace requires compromise.
