Three hundred workers from the Pirelli Tires factory in Alexandria ended their sit-in before the presidential palace in Heliopolis on Wednesday after meeting with Yasser Ali, the acting presidential spokesperson, for the second time in two days. Ali assured them that their grievances would be presented to President Mohamed Morsy in a few days.
Company labor union president Ahmed Kandil said Ali showed the protesters a copy of the complaint that was sent by the Ministry of Manpower against the company for violating labor laws.
“We were also promised legal measures against the management if it continues to refrain from paying wages,” Kandil said.
Kandil added that although the sit-in is over, 1,200 workers would continue the strike that began on 10 June.
The company’s CEO Karim Koddas said that Pirelli is keen on resolving the crisis through legal means.
