A police agent was killed and three other officers wounded on Sunday east of Alexandria by gunshots from unknown attackers.
The policemen from Montazah police department suspected a private car and a microbus standing by the high road near their station. Approaching the vehicles, the officers were met with shooting from automatic guns by the suspected passengers.
Egyptian security has been struggling against a series of almost weekly bloody attacks since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsy in 2013. Most of the assaults were claimed by extremist groups, though authorities blame Morsy’s Muslim Brotherhood for being behind the attacks.
