A police recruit was injured early Monday near Sawah police checkpoint in Abdel Qader al-Jilany Square near Qasr al-Qobba neighborhood of Cairo, following the explosion of a hand grenade, which was thrown by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle, security sources said.
The blast was heard as far away as Ain Shams, Matariya, Heliopolis and Nasr City, according to witnesses and residents.
A team from the Public Prosecution examined the site of the blast on Monday morning.
The officer in charge of the checkpoint was questioned, while the forensic department closely examined and photographed the site of the explosion.
Major General Abdel Aziz Khader, head of North Cairo Security, explained that the perpetrators targeted the police checkpoint from a distance, facilitating the injury of the recruit as well as their getaway.
The injured was taken to the hospital for treatment, while the police are currently combing the area to find the attackers.
