A non-commissioned police officer and a citizen were killed on Thursday night after a number of gunmen opened fire while being subjected to inspection at a security checkpoint located in Esna city in Egypt’s Luxor governorate.
According to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram, one of the assailants had been arrested and the vehicle used in the attack contained a suicide-bomb vest and weapons.
Mohamed Abdelmagd Al-Khateeb, a 27-year-old citizen, was killed in the attack when chasing the gunmen’s vehicle in an attempt to help the police officers. Mohammed Mohammed Al-Baei, a 37-year-old a non-commissioned police officer was also killed.
Three other people were injured in the attack.
No militant group has declared responsibility for the attack.
However, two militant groups, ‘Lewaa El-Thawra’ and ‘Hasm’, have recently carried out similar attacks on police and army officials in the area.
