Police officer killed in attack in Suez

The Head Detective of the Ganayen police station in Suez, Mohamed Sueilam, died in the early hours of Thursday, while chasing the armed assailants that had targeted a police checkpoint, situated near the house of the former interior minister's mother in Suez's al-Melaha area.

Sueilam's gunshot wound led to his death, shortly after his arrival to hospital. The confrontation between the police and the armed assailants occurred in the area of al-Alban al-Gadida. One of the attackers was killed and transferred to a morgue.

Head of Suez Security Directorate, Tareq al-Gazzar told Al-Masry Al-Youm that four armed men in a private car had fired randomly at a police checkpoint near the house belonging to the former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim's mother. A security cordon was formed around the scene of the incident and security forces combed the area, he added.

The same checkpoint had been attacked by unknown assailants last year.
