Egyptian authorities thwarted 22 Egyptian migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Kafr al-Sheikh.
Security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm two groups of illegal immigrants were arrested at al-Borollos village on the coast. A security official told United Press International that a group of smugglers were helping immigrants travel to Italy via al-Borollos coast, anticipating police would be busy with other security matters following the revolution and regional unrest.
The detainees said during investigations that smugglers agreed to help them for a fee of LE40,000 per person, and that their families should pay the money after they arrive in Italy.
