Policeman granted retrial on charges of killing activist

Prosecutors have granted policeman Yassin Hatem a retrial on charges of killing political activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh in January 2015.

Hatem was given a 15-year sentence for the murder of Sabbagh, but he submitted an appeal, which was reviewed by the Court of Cassation on Sunday. The court ruled that the policeman should face trial again, as requested.

Sabbagh, a member of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party (SPAP), was shot dead near Tahrir Square on the fourth anniversary of the 2011 uprising. Her killing provoked anger among political activists as she was protesting peacefully at the time of the attack.
