Political groups cry foul over Shura elections

Some 50 representatives of various political parties and movements staged demonstrations before the parliament building on Thursday, claiming that Shura Council elections, which wrapped up earlier this month, had been rigged.

Protesters demanded that all council seats won by candidates of the ruling National Democratic Party be withdrawn.

Security services prevented protesters from marching to the Shura Council building in downtown Cairo, prompting the latter to stage a vigil before parliament.

Limited clashes were reported between protesters and security forces.

The Muslim Brotherhood opposition movement, for its part, called on all opposition parties to reject the election results, accusing the ruling party of attempting to monopolize control over parliament.
