Pope Tawadros II headed Easter Friday mass, known to Christians as Friday of Sorrows, at the cathedral of St. Mark in Abbasiya, Cairo.
Hundreds of Orthodox Christians and priests took part in the mass.
Other Egyptian churches as well witnessed masses for worshipers amid tight security on the Friday of Sorrows. Black curtains were hung in churches as a sign of grief on the occasion of Christ's crucifixion.
The masses should continue until 6 pm, whereas black curtains will remain on church walls throughout the Week of Sorrows.
According to the Christian faith, the Friday of Sorrows is the day of the crucifixion and burial of Christ, which is the Friday before the feast of Resurrection.
Sad melodies are sung by deacons, while priests put on black clothes on that day.
