Post Authority: 34% of post offices nationwide are on strike

Ashraf Gamal Eddin, head of the National Post Authority, said 1,316 out of 3,900 post offices nationwide are on strike, 34 percent of the total offices.

Yet he predicted that the strike would end soon, adding that the pensions would be disbursed at alternative locations if the strike goes on.

“We cannot meet all the demands, for we do not have enough money,” he said, pointing out that securing the offices costs LE500,000.

He called on the workers to take into account the current circumstances of the country and go back to work in order to achieve advancement so that the authority disburses the financial benefits that were approved by the board.

The protesting workers had said the strike reached 90 percent of the offices.

They demand that the chairman and his advisers leave, that the authority report directly to the Cabinet, a 7 percent bonus to the basic salary, a 50 percent incentive to compensate for the government’s failure to apply a minimum wage, the deduction of the strike days from the annual leaves and assurance that the strike leaders would not be prosecuted.
