President Sisi orders drafting personal status law for Muslims

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Minister of Justice Omar Marawan on Saturday, and discussed following up on the ministry’s efforts regarding the drafting of a personal status law according to presidential spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Sisi ordered the formation of a committee of legal and judicial expertise specialized in family cases and courts, in order to prepare a draft personal status law for Muslims.

The president tasked that the law take into account the multiple interests of all parties concerned with its provisions, in a balanced manner that addresses family and societal concerns.

The president also ordered that the relevant state agencies – in particular the Interior Ministry, the Public Prosecution, the Administrative Control Authority and the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics – provide the law drafting committee with the accurate information necessary to support it in performing its tasks.

Marwan reviewed the ongoing efforts by his ministry to develop the litigation system related to the Egyptian family, in order to achieve the desired stability in Egyptian society and preserve the rights of all family members.

Rady said that the Minister of Justice also reviewed the efforts made by the Egyptian judiciary to achieve prompt justice by dealing with a huge number of cases presented daily before the Egyptian courts.

Sisi also directed the awarding of a medal to be allocated to former heads and members of judicial bodies, or to the name of those who passed away, in appreciation of their distinguished judicial career, with the “Egyptian Judiciary Medal.”
