Pro-Assad newspaper denounces withdrawal of Egyptian ambassador

A Syrian newspaper supporting President Bashar al-Assad condemned on Tuesday a decision by Egypt to withdraw its ambassador to Damascus, claiming the move was made under pressure from the Muslim Brotherhood.

Semi-official newspaper Al-Watan said the decision made in February undermines “common Arab action and compromises all parties.” The paper added that the Egyptian move, and Syria’s consequent response by withdrawing its ambassador to Cairo, made the scene in the Arab region “very dramatic.”

The Egyptian government had withdrawn Ambassador Shawqy Ismail to protest an ongoing bloody crackdown by Syrian security forces against anti-government protests sweeping the country since March 2011.

The newspaper claimed the decision by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces was made under pressure from the Brotherhood.

Al-Watan said the Arab League’s calls to protect the Syrian people were proven false when the league pulled out its observers’ mission from Syria and referred the crisis to the UN Security Council.

If the Security Council approves the Arab-Western plans on Syria, a disaster in the region will inevitably occur, the newspaper warned.

The Arab stance on Syria paves the way for “Zionist enemies” to enter the Arab world, the paper said.
