Pro-Muslim Brotherhood students continued to demonstrate at Al-Azhar University Tuesday morning at various locations throughout the male and female campuses in Nasr City.
Commerce students assembled in front of the university gate to prevent the entry of students and professors, while hundreds of Faculty of Education students gathered to protest the referral of colleagues to disciplinary boards as well as the intervention of the security forces in university affairs, accusing them of injuring and detaining dozens of students.
Student at the female campus also tried to shut down the university by not allowing students or professors on campus. Dozens of female students started protesting on campus, largely unsupervised by security forces except for some members of the university's internal security stationed at the gates.
The protests comes despite assurances from Al-Azhar University administration that classes would resume as normal in all colleges in preparation for end-of-term exams.
Ten students were arrested on Monday in clashes with security forces on campus and a private bus was torched by demonstrators.
Students at Al-Azhar University have stepped up protests since a fellow student was killed on campus in clashes by security forces 21 November. The victim was a sixth year medical student named Abdel Ghany Mohamed Hamouda. Students have vowed to continue protesting until the perpetrator of Hamouda's death is brought to justice.
