Prominent figures named in connection to gas deal with Israel

Several prominent figures in the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak have been named as responsible for arranging a gas deal with Israel, according to which Egypt would sell gas to Israel at much-reduced prices.

The defense team of former Petroleum Authority President Ibrahim Saleh Mahmoud, who is being questioned over gas exports to Israel, revealed that former Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman, former Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmy, and business tycoon Hussein Salem were members of the committee that was formed by former Prime Minister Atef Ebeid in 2004 to handle natural gas exports to Israel.

The team said the fact that Salem, a close friend of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, was a member of the committee meant that the president of the Petroleum Authority had no say, and that he received orders from above.

It also requested that the authorities question the mentioned figures about their involvement in the case.
