Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah approved on Monday the Supreme State Funds Prosecution’s decision to keep a file open regarding charges filed against Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, who was accused of squandering public funds.
The charges were filed by an Azhar employee, who accused Tayyeb of illegaly contracting the Arab Contractors Company to renovate the Azhar buildings for LE163.5 million through a direct order.
Initial investigations into the matter showed that the Cabinet had approved the contract, thus clearing Tayyeb of the charges.
