Egypt’s General Prosecution has ordered an investigation into a complaint filed against an opposition group whose members waged media attacks against the regime and defended the Muslim Brotherhood.
Al-Dostour newspaper said lawyer Samir Sabry has demanded the founders of Bedaya (Beginning) be referred to criminal court and that the group's activities and financial resources be scrutinized.
He referred to attacks the group's founder Sherif Diab made about the current government on the satellite TV channel Dream three days ago.
“We cannot remain stranded between religious fascism and military fascism four years after the January 2011 uprising,” Diab said in the interview, referring to the Muslim Brotherhood government which was ousted in 2013 by current president and former defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
“The group (the Muslim Brotherhood) is not terrorist,” Diab said during the interview, arguing that his group is against the use of “sectarian rhetoric” against any group.
His remarks prompted Sabry to link the group to the Muslim Brotherhood in his petition, accusing its members of supporting terrorism and seeking to overthrow the government.
Apart from Diab, Bedaya was co-founded by Asmaa Mahfouz, a prominent activist during the 2011 uprising, as well as Ziyad al-Elaimy, a former MP and a vocal critic of both the Brotherhood and the military institution.
