Public figures join opposition Wafd Party

A number of public figures and university professors formally joined the opposition Wafd Party on Monday.

“The Wafd’s transparent elections encouraged me to join the party,” said prominent businessman Salem Mashhour.

University Professor Ibrahim Raslan, for his part, said he had decided to join the party because he agreed with its ideological platform.

Gezira Rotary Club Vice President Sherifa Sorour said she joined the party since its new president, El-Sayed el-Badawi, was known for translating words into action.

“The party works in the interest of the nation,” said new party member Dr. Mohamed el-Husseini.

According to Wafd Vice President Fouad Badrawi, the party planned to field candidates in upcoming parliamentary elections. He went on to deny, however, that the party would nominate celebrated goalkeeper Abdel Wahed el-Sayed for a seat in parliament.

“El-Sayed never asked to be nominated,” Badrawi said.
