Public transportation drivers said that one of their colleagues died Friday at the Public Transport Authority (PTA) hospital after a week of fasting.
Sayyed Mohamed Ahmed Ali decided along with other drivers to stage a hunger strike in protest of the cabinet's refusal to respond to their demands for higher salaries and increased benefits.
Strikers said that Ali died after his health deteriorated, adding he was one of about 60 drivers who had participated in the hunger strike.
About 30,000 public transportation drivers staged a strike in Egypt last week to protest their poor financial conditions. The cabinet said increasing drivers' salaries will cost the country LE138 million a year.
