Qaliubiya Governor resigns after protests demanding his departure

Qaliubiya Governor Adly Hussein on Sunday submitted his resignation to Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq due to “difficult circumstances posed by current events,” as he put it.

Hussein resigned after residents of the province staged an open sit-in, requesting his departure, in front of his office.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, who took over responsibility after the departure of former President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, had requested all governors to continue in office.
