Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) called for a special session of the UN Human Rights Council to discuss the situation in Tunisia.
In a statement issued Thursday, the organization said it delivered a message to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay in Geneva Wednesday, urging the UN to investigate Tunisian authorities' abuse of power over the past month.
The institute also called for the formation of a joint committee of United Nations and African Union officials to visit Tunisia to investigate freedom of expression violations, arbitrary arrest and detention and extrajudicial executions.
CIHRS also demanded that the UN supply aid to guarantee integrity of Tunisian elections under UN surveillance.
According to the CIHRS statement, Pillay affirmed the UN’s commitment to rectifying the situation in Tunisia and announced that a human rights delegation will be sent to Tunisia next week to investigate the situation there.
