Rising waters in Lake Victoria spells good news for Egypt regarding GERD dispute: Professor

Professor of Geology and Water Resources at the Cairo University Abbas Sharaky announced Saturday that Lake Victoria achieved the highest water level this year in its history.

During a phone interview with “al-Hadath al-Youm” satellite channel, Sharaky said that the lake exceeded its highest level by about five cm, noting that “The rain regime in the sources of the Nile River is in a great miracle … all months of the year have rain.”

“God wanted Egypt’s share to remain in his protection and care,” he remarked.

Sharaky noted that the level of rain will be high in Ethiopia during July, which will reflect on Egypt’s water revenues and reduce the amount of storage damage in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The High Dam guarantees protection for Egypt from Ethiopia’s releases of excess water, he noted, assuring that Egypt has all the water it needs during Ethiopia’s storage period.

An increase in Lake Victoria by one cm means an increase of one billion cubic meters of water, the professor said, adding that the lake has increased by about 50 cm within the past period.
