Sergei Bachenko, Russian ambassador to Cairo, said that Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is a good politician with a great future because of the significant role he has played modern Egypt.
He added that President Nasser was a good son of the Egyptian nation and a great father to his people.
On the sidelines of his visit to Suez, Bachenko hoped Egypt would have balanced relations with superpowers, pointing out that Russia is keen to support Egypt strongly as it did during the Soviet era.
“We have strong military cooperation,” he added. “And we canceled the travel warning to Egypt on 21 November.”
He also said that there is an understanding between the two countries about the Syrian issue. “We are working on the Geneva Two Conference to find a solution to the crisis,” he said.
Many political analysts say Egypt could be spurning US criticism of heavy-handedness against protesters, by moving to its historical rival, Russia. During the Soviet era, the two world powers competed for influence in Egypt, but the US eventually won over when it brokered the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt.
